If you’re moving from Vista to Windows 7, you might be wondering what happened to Windows Photo Gallery, or in XP you might have used another photo manager. Today we take a look at using Windows Live Photo Gallery from the Windows Live Essentials suite.
Windows Live Photo Gallery
Windows Photo Gallery was included in Vista and did an adequate job handling your photo needs. If you’ve moved to Windows 7, or are just looking for a new photo management tool, Windows Live Photo Gallery is certainly worth a look. Download the Live Essentials installer and select Photo Gallery and any other app from the list of you want to use.
Note: Keep in mind you don’t have to install them all…only the ones you want.
In the You’re almost done! screen, make sure to uncheck the boxes to set your search provider and homepage if you don’t want them changed.
After installation, to start using Live Photo Gallery click on Start and go to Windows Live Windows Live Photo Gallery.
The first time you launch it you’ll be prompted to sign in with your Windows Live account.
You might also want to use Live Photo Gallery to open TIF and BMP files.
Now you can start to view and manage your photos. If you hover the pointer over a thumbnail, you’ll get a larger view of it.
On the left side you’re able to browse through your picture directories, sort by date taken, and people or descriptive tags.
Click on an image to tag the photo with your own information or find out other photo data. It allows you to zoom in on an image, rotate them, rate a photo, start a slid show and more.
Another nice built in feature is being able to resize your photos. Right-click on an image in the gallery and select Resize. Now you can select between predefined sizes or your own custom size.
There is the ability to easily import your pictures from a camera or scanner using an easy to follow wizard.
You can include any folder into the gallery and monitors those folders for any new additions.
In Windows Live Photo Gallery Options you can specify different default actions it uses when importing pictures from different devices and media.
Also, you can determine how images will be tagged, so if you have several images from a few different trips for example, they can be easily found and organized.
Personalize your computer by adding your Photo Gallery in as your Screen Saver.
You can go in and do some basic edits to photos like adjusting color effects, fixing red eye, crop and straighten photos.
You can make blog posts, CDs, DVDs and more with your photos from Live Photo Gallery and other Live or Windows tools.
Live Photo Gallery allows you to publish photos to your SkyDrive, print them out, and share them with others via email.
It also includes the ability to save and share your images on flickr.
You can also find other plug-ins for it that will let you easily share your photos to other social sites like Facebook, Drupal, SmugMug, Picasa, and more.

When I disable thumbnail preview, I like my folder icon, but I also lose photo preview. How can I get the folder icon like second one along with having photo preview in thumbnail?
I compromised to use a 3rd party tool.

I think thumbnail and photo previews are one and the same, so what you ask for is impossible without a 3rd party tool (and I'm not too sure about that either).

Sagethumbs does this, you need to check the 'always show icons, never thumbnails' option and then open Sagethumbs and click ok, you also have specific options to chose what kind of files will show a thumbnail.

Download the ShellExView utility: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
In this utility, disable the 'Typed Data Thumbnail Handler' shell extension.
After this done, folders are shown as folder icons while pictures, videos and pdf files are shown as thumbnails. Also folders are shown as thumbnails when large icons view in current folder is enabled.
You can do it without a third-party tool as well, just disable this extension via registry. The following reg file does the trick:
P.S. It seems this extension exists only on Windows 8. So for Windows 7 the question remains unanswered.

This is a Windows Explorer option (Unless you are talking about the desktop. You cannot do this in the desktop to my knowledge.).
When viewing the folder in Explorer, click View -->Thumbnails. This will cause your icons to display a folder with up to four photos within it.
This is what you will get:
Hope this helps.

In Windows 10, when you hover over a taskbar button of a running app or group of apps, a thumbnail preview appears on the screen. For a single window it shows a single thumbnail, and for multiple windows it shows a number of thumbnail previews in a row. If you wish to disable these thumbnails in Windows 10, I will explain how it can be done with a simple Registry tweak.

To disable taskbar preview thumbnails in Windows 10, do the following:
- Open Registry Editor.
- Go to the following Registry key:Tip: You can access any desired Registry key with one click.
- Here, create a new 32-bit DWORD value named ExtendedUIHoverTime. Note: If you are running 64-bit Windows 10, you still need to create a 32-bit DWORD. Set its value data to 9000 in decimals. This means it will show the thumbnail after 9000 milliseconds (or 9 seconds) of hovering over any taskbar button. So, with such a high timeout value, you will never see taskbar thumbnail previews.
- Restart the Explorer shell or sign out and sign in back to Windows 10.
This will disable taskbar thumbnail previews in Windows 10. See screenshots below.

After:
It is possible to disable taskbar thumbnails only for a group of opened windows i.e.multiple instances of the app. Once this is done, Windows 10 will show a list of windows instead of thumbnails. The list makes it easier to identify them from a group instead of mostly similar looking thumbnails. To do this, follow these instructions:
- Go to the following Registry key:
- Create a new 32-bit DWORD value named NumThumbnails. Leave its value as 0. Note: If you are running 64-bit Windows 10, you still need to create a 32-bit DWORD value.
- Restart the Explorer shell or sign out and sign in back to Windows 10.

You are done! To restore the defaults, just delete the above mentioned NumThumbnails and ExtendedUIHoverTime values. Don't forget to restart the Explorer shell.
Winaero Tweaker
If you would like to avoid Registry editing, here is good news for you. In the past, I created a freeware tool called Winaero Tweaker, One of its options is 'Taskbar Thumbnails'. It can tweak and change many hidden secret taskbar thumbnail parameters which cannot be changed via the Windows 10 GUI.
It can control all mentioned parameters in the article and many more. Using this tool, you will be able:
- Adjust thumbnail size.
- Adjust number of grouped application thumbnail windows.
- Adjust horizontal spacing between the thumbnails.
- Adjust vertical spacing between the thumbnails.
- Adjust thumbnail's caption position.
- Adjust thumbnail's top margin.
- Adjust thumbnail's bottom margin.
- Adjust thumbnail's left margin.
- Adjust thumbnail's right margin.
- Completely disable taskbar thumbnails.
To run it in Windows 10, download Winaero Tweaker from here. It works in Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7 without issues.

Are you looking for a Microsoft Office Picture Manager alternative? While there are hundreds of photo editing software available for download, you don’t have to look elsewhere or spend a dime for basic photo editing tools. Windows Live Photo Gallery has almost the same set of tools like the former, except that it’s free and has syncing/publishing features.
Microsoft introduced Windows Live Photo Gallery in 2012 as part of the Windows Essentials, and a stable version was released in January 2014 that runs in Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems. It’s considered a good alternative to Microsoft Picture Manager for editing and managing photos.
Installing the freeware
You may search for “Windows Live Photo Gallery” in your system to see if it’s already installed, otherwise go to the Windows Essentials page and download it.
Import photos and videos
Windows Live Photo Gallery allows you to import photos and videos from devices (smartphones, tablets, video cams, etc.) via USB port except for, guess what? … iOS devices.
Windows Live Photo Gallery Replacement
I tried to refresh the “Import Photos and Videos” box to see if it will detect my iPhone, but to no avail. However, when I connected my Android device, it was detected after a few seconds. You must also include folders in your system manually for the library of your photos.
Basic photo editing tasks
The editing features are almost the same with the Microsoft Picture Manager, allowing you to crop, rotate, resize, adjust the noise, color and exposure as well as apply effects and retouching. The changes are automatically saved, but you can revert to the original photo anytime.
in “Edit” mode, it doesn’t support the right-click “Resize” option, unless the photos are in thumbnails format at “Home.”
Organize images
With Windows Live Photo Gallery, you can organize multiple images and add tags – “People tags”, “Geotag”, “Caption” and “Descriptive tags.” You’ll find the metadata on the right side of screen for more information.
There’s an option called “Batch people tag” that allows you to select the faces and identify them quickly. Other photo management features include the “Flagged” option, “Text search” and “Rated” photos for quick search.

Additional features for creating new images
The software supports add-on editing features such as Panorama stitching – images should have the same scene to overlap (e.g. landscape). On the other hand, the “Photo Fuse” requires you to have two or more images taken with the same vantage point, subjects, and lightning to align them.
Try the “Auto Collage” and select seven or more images to see the random arrangement, but it doesn’t support borders and frames. You can create order prints, add photos to blog posts (via Windows Live Writer) and embed photos to your Movie Maker file. More tools are available for free aside from the abovementioned features by downloading the following plug-ins:
- Image Composite Editor
- Photosynth
- Microsoft Research Cliplets
- Picasa Web Publisher
- Publish to Photo Frame
Share options for social media
Share your photos to friends and followers via Flickr, Facebook, Vimeo, YouTube, and Live Messenger, and upload them to OneDrive for backup. To publish your photos to these channels, Photo Gallery requires authorization to each account.
Note: You may also download other freeware photo editing desktop apps. As the saying goes, “The best things in life are free,” but when it comes to free software, the worst things you can get are adware, malware, and spyware if you don’t do your homework, so make sure you download the safe ones from legit sites only. Conclusion
As a writer, most of my photo editing tasks for blogs and write-ups include: resize, compress, and crop. Windows Live Photo Gallery is a good alternative to Microsoft Office Picture Manager for those activities. It also supports Slideshow and lets you change the theme while watching. However, another caveat I found is that you can only edit photos in JPEG format. The solution? If it’s a screenshot in PNG format, click the “Make a copy from the Manage group.”
