I've had this problem a few days where I simply can't set a default browser (or any other default software from the settings) anymore. It let's me to go to the list and choose, say, Google Chrome, but then doesn't save my choice. I can revert to Microsoft's default settings in general, when the choice will stay as Edge. This bugs me the most when clicking on URL links in other software, they open up randomly in both Chrome (which I actively use) and Edge (which is the current default).
I have tried to set Chrome as the default browser from its own settings, too, but to no avail. Would also very much want to use VLC Player as the default for videos, but Win10 is being a pain in the butt and doesn't let me do it.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced the same? Trying to google for similar cases was pretty much impossible, at least for me.
If it's of any help, I'm sporting a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop with Intel Cote i7-4710HQ.
When opening video files, sometimes the aspect ratio doesn't fit my TV and I see black bars either side:
How can I set the default aspect ratio to 16:9, so that I don't have to right-click and change each video's aspect ratio manually every time?

- Choose Show settings > All.
- From the left pane, scroll down to the bottom and click Video.
- How to turn wireless capability on windows 7. From the right pane, scroll down to Source aspect ratio; fill in
16:9
. - Hit Save:
The next time you open VLC, your videos will automatically have your chosen aspect ratio:

I have seen people say to click get info then do something with the 'open with' but when I go to get info there is NO open with option, no options to change at all. I cannot drag the files into VLC like I could before the upgrade either. Please help me out! I am not real tech savvy, but I can do basics and follow instructions. Thanks.

Right click on any movie file you have.
Get Info
At the bottom of that window you will see the current app used to open it.
Change to VLC and use the 'Change all'
You need to repeat that for all movie files that have different extension.
Normally you would have .fvl, the .mov, and maybe some other formats.

I just tested a m4v file with VLC Version 2.2.1 and it works fine. (Not sure what type of media files you are trying to open) So here is what I did:
Right click or ctrl+click on the media fileOpen with > VLC
The file opened just fine.To open ALL files by that type:Use the Get Info option. (in the picture) From there you can select
Change all to use VLC with all files of this type.
I hope this is useful to you in solving your issue.

I can't seem to set VLC media player as the default video player. I have gone to System Settings → System Info → Default Applications, and changed 'Video' to VLC media player.
However, all movies still open with Movie Player (Totem) by default. The video default application setting appears to have no effect. I have tried changing the setting and logging out/rebooting, but it doesn't appear to work.
Is there some command-line magic that can work on this?

Go to System Settings → System info → Default Applications, and set it there. It works in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).
In Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) and later, it's found in System Settings → Details → Default Applications.

If you want to assocoate all video mimetypes with vlc for current user, you can do this:
- Check totem is currently default for all video mimetypes:You will see lines like this:
- Append all the lines containing video types to the local file:
- Replace all occurences of '=totem.desktop' with '=vlc.desktop' in vim, nano, geany or gedit. E.g. Search->Replace in gedit:
P.S.: If you want to open audio by default in vlc too, then just replace 'grep video' with 'grep audio' and '=totem.desktop' with '=rhythmbox.desktop' in above 1,2,3.

Remove the totem video player via ubuntu software center. It appears with name 'Video'. This will make every video format use VLC automatically.
